Power your beat: Powering a DJ performance with an IONIQ 5

The IONIQ 5 was designed to power your life wherever you are. It gives you the power to achieve great things. We have already shown that it can power art installations, and astrophotography equipment while on the move. So, to turn up the volume even more, we teamed up with DJ Sofia Kourtesis and used an IONIQ 5 to power her DJ set in a remote location. Read on to find out how it all came together.
Leaving no trace behind
Here at Hyundai, we’re committed to building an emissions-free world for Generation One. So, it’s important for us to ensure that our cars can power your life in an environmentally way that leaves no trace behind. So, we put our all-electric IONIQ 5 to the test and teamed up with Sofia Kourtesis to power and give a live streaming musical performance by only using the car’s Vehicle-to-load (V2L) function.
Introducing: DJ Sofia Kourtesis
Sofia Kourtesis is a Peruvian-Greek DJ and musician from Berlin. She describes herself as an activist, a producer, and a human rights activist. For her, music is in her blood as she started making music when she was very little. “My dad used to play in a rock band and my mom was a singer,” she says.
I’m very connected to nature. I grew up in a jungle, like my mom,
so we have a very close relationship with our mother earth.

Sofia elicits colorful imagery and dreamlike soundscapes with her music. With a growing number of international accolades to her name, she creates beats that are inspired by her native Peru and her new home in Berlin.
For her, DJing is more than just about making music. “I think the most important thing about writing music, is to have something to say. It's not only about the voice, it's about the message that you get out there. It's more than just going out and having fun,” she says.
Finding the perfect location
We gave Sofia an IONIQ 5 so that she could power a special DJ set in a remote location surrounded by nature. As a musician she says, “I am very inspired by the places I go. Traveling is very inspiring and gives me a lot of inspiration.”
When choosing where to do her musical performance, she said, “it’s very important to connect with the beauty of nature” and the spot she chose, on the Portuguese coast, provided that connection.

As an artist, she takes her inspiration from nature and uses her music to fight for our planet. “I grew up in a jungle, like my mom, so we have a very close relationship with our mother earth, so I also see myself as an environmental activist and this is one part of my heart that is beating all the time.” She used this opportunity to play a set surrounded by nature, to spread awareness about humanity’s connection to nature and the importance of protecting it.
Music and sustainability
“We have a mission as artists to try to somehow educate the new generation on how to travel in a more environmentally friendly way,” Sofia says. For her, it’s about taking the car or an environmentally friendly car like the IONIQ 5 instead of a plane when traveling to gigs within Europe. She also says it’s important for artists to be “aware and try to take part in concerts where they don’t use plastic,” and “change the way we used to do things.”
The Power of the IONIQ 5
We helped Sofia get out into a remote place for her DJ set by giving her an IONIQ 5. Not only does the IONIQ 5 have enough driving range to drive you to remote locations, but the V2L function can also supply up to 3.6 kW of power. All Sofia had to do was connect her speakers and DJ deck to the V2L function and start powering her beats.
The IONIQ 5 is fitted with 2 V2L ports, one is located under the second-row seats, and can be activated when the vehicle is on so you can charge your devices while you’re on the move. The other V2L port is located at the charging port on the outside of the vehicle. Using a converter, you can charge high-power electric equipment like DJ decks or speakers. The outside port provides power even when the vehicle is turned off so you can power up all kinds of appliances and equipment wherever you go.
As for her experience with the IONIQ 5, Sofia says, “it’s cool what you can achieve with a car like this without impacting the environment. Normally I do everything I can to leave no trace behind. But this is next level.”

we need all the people to join us on this big fight for our earth.
